Helping Babies Breathe Project Awarded Prestigeous 2015 Children's Prize
December 10, 2015
We would like to extend our congratulations to Carrie Jo Cain, the program health director of World Hope International (WHI), for winning the prestigious Children’s Prize. The Children’s Prize is an annual global competition seeking to fund the best and most effective child survival project proposing to save the greatest number of children’s lives. WHI's project was selected from dozens of submissions, all of which have the potential to save lives.
WHI will use the $250,000 award to implement the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) program to save an estimated 5,336 lives at birth in Sierra Leone over the course of two years. Sierre Leone has an under five mortality rate of 156 per 1000 live births, and in 2013 alone reported over 10,000 neonatal deaths.
Through this program, WHI aims to teach over 2,000 Maternal Child Health aides and Traditional Birth Attendants essential skills in newborn resuscitation. This is an exciting achievement for the entire HBB community!
