Africa Regional Meeting on Essential Obstetric and Newborn Care

Addis Ababa, February 21-25, 2011

More than 300 leading experts within maternal and child health gathered for Africa Regional Meeting on Interventions for Impact in Essential Obstetric and Newborn Care in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, February 21-25, for what arguably must have been the most significant meeting of its kind on the African continent for many years.

Helping Babies Breathe® (HBB) had a strong presence in the program, most notably by 140 health workers from 26 countries completing a two-day HBB master trainers course during the conference.

There was also an HBB orientation session at the main conference, with Lily Kak (USAID) as moderator, and Dr Mongi (WHO), Joseph de-Graft Johnson (StC), Jeff Smith (Jhpiego), Tore Laerdal, and Nalini Singhal (AAP) as presenters. Dr Mongi for the first time announced the WHO position that any country wishing to substitute the newborn resuscitation module in WHO's Essential Newborn Care (ENC) course with HBB would be free to do so.

MamaNatalie was demonstrated in three parallel sessions in a practical workshop attended by about 200 conference participants.
